It started with reading books about places near and far. It didn’t matter where it was – Meggie wanted to go there! She had a little suitcase that had belonged to her older sister and she was always ready for adventure. Whether it was a visit in the family car to see her grandmother in Pennsylvania or a day trip to the beach, she was the first one in the car saying “Are we there yet?” After she read Alice in Wonderland she wanted to go to England and see hedgehogs. When she was nine her family moved from Massachusetts to California and they traveled on Route 66. Meggie liked seeing the mountains, the desert and the interesting places to stop along the way. And after all these adventures she still likes to travel!

I really do think that urge to travel and see the world starts when we are young usually by reading books about other countries. I hope my books inspire children to want to travel. Your pictures are great!

Travels on Rt 66 back had to be interesting! So where are each of the pictures? Independence Hall? The one beside it looks European.

Route 66 was so interesting and I remember thinking the mountains would never get closer or the desert would never end! The photos are: bridge – San Antonio; castle – Rhine River, Germany; Independence Hall; pond – Virginia; door – Milan, Italy. The country scene is from the Cotswolds. Thank you for asking – next time I’ll use captions! š

I want to see hedgehogs too! Someday. This girl had to wait for retirement. And then the virus delayed her plans. š Soon though! There are hedgehogs in the future.

Reminds me that we were out walking a couple of weeks ago and I almost stood on a baby hedgehog. He’d strayed on to the path! My companion managed to pick him up and point him in the direction of Mum š š

What a beautiful collection of lovely photos, Meg. My desire to travel started because of all the books I’ve read in my childhood/teen years. First I went mad for Moomin family adventures and wanted to visit Finland right away and then I was reading the classics, everything from Jack London and Jules Verne to Rudyard Kipling and Walter Scott. Thanks for sharing and have a good day. Aiva š

This post is so lovely, Meg. We didn’t travel far when I was a child, but my dad always had itchy feet and every weekend, we would all pile into our small car for a day’s outing, even on holiday weekends when the roads were jam-packed with traffic and we would rather stay home and play outside rather than sit in a stuffy car for hours on end. š

Thanks -it sounds like you have some wonderful travel memories! I also remember weekend trips were lots of fun and (probably) easier for parents to plan with young children… š
