Lake Michigan in September

A visit to Lake Michigan on a sunny and windy afternoon was perfect for late September. Lots of people walked on the beach and the pier to the lighthouse. The spray from the waves got people (including me) a little wet!

This seagull disregards the sign.

It was a lovely day to spend at the beach while it is still warm…

A Second Year of Meggie’s Adventures Begins

It’s the first anniversary of Meggie’s Adventures! Last September I started this blog to write about all my favorite things: travel, ice cream (and gelato), flowers, going to the beach, and collecting postcards. Many of the stories take place when I was young, which is why the blog is called Meggie’s Adventures. But as I like to point out, I still love ice cream, flowers and travel so that hasn’t changed!

My first post was A Family Day at the Beach when we used to go to the beach in Maine. It’s been wonderful having this blog and I’m looking forward to a second year of fun adventures.

Beach Days

Meggie’s family used to take weekend trips to Maine to go to the beach.  When they got close to the water she always rolled down her car window to smell the crisp and salty ocean air.  This was one of Meggie’s favorite childhood memories, along with collecting shells in her pail and building castles (with moats).  These pictures from the coast of Maine are reminders of the excitement of that first scent of the ocean.

Lake Scenes

I visited Lake Michigan several times during the past year and It changed significantly from season to season. Here are some pictures showing the contrasts.

The winter featured snow and ice on the water.

The summer scenes are much more inviting if you want to swim! Here it’s early in the day and people haven’t arrived yet…

And here’s a picture from last November.

The lake is wonderful to visit any season of the year!

A Family Day at the Beach

Every summer Meggie went with her family to the beach on Saturdays.  There were lots of beaches to choose from, and if they left early enough they could drive all the way to New Hampshire or Maine.  Meggie thought the water was cold in Maine, even in August.  But she always brought a pail and shovel so she could either build a sand castle or collect shells to take home.  She had a large collection of broken shells, but she did sometimes find clam shells that were in one piece.  Some of her favorites were shiny and orange, and she kept them in a small glass jar on her dresser.

She also liked swimming in the ocean, but she always stayed close to her family.  For lunch her Mom would bring baked chicken, potato chips and carrot sticks.  Meggie was always hungry and enjoyed the food, although everything had sand in it.  Right after she was done eating Meggie said “I’m going in the water.” But her Mom insisted that Meggie wait an hour before going swimming “so she wouldn’t get cramps”.  Meggie was sad about having to wait but she ended up getting her pail and collecting seashells for the next hour.

When it was late afternoon Meggie’s family would gather everything up and head back to their station wagon to go home.  Meggie clutched her pail full of cheery seashells to keep as souvenirs.  Although it had been an exciting day, she always fell asleep in the car and was surprised to find herself home so quickly.  It had been a wonderful adventure.
